L-3 MPRI Launches Branching Capability in 390 Series Firearm Training Simulator
New 390v6 provides highly interactive, portable, untethered training for law enforcement and military personnel
ALEXANDRIA, Va., September 1, 2010 – L-3 MPRI, a global leader in training services and simulator-based training products, announced today that it has launched the 390v6 judgmental shoot/no-shoot firearm training simulator, which delivers portable, deployable, untethered firearm training in a completely risk-free environment. This highly interactive system features a new branching capability that immediately responds to trainee input or instructor commands for a wholly realistic experience.
L-3 MPRI’s 390v6 simulator allows instructors to work closely with trainees in quickly identifying and improving upon weaknesses using a variety of scenarios with convincing dry fire. By achieving trainee readiness with the use of fewer live rounds, the 390v6 saves both time and money. It also gives organizations the opportunity to increase training for marksmen who might not otherwise receive more than the required minimum of live practice rounds.
“The 390v6 enables law enforcement and military personnel to routinely conduct effective marksmanship and judgmental training scenarios that are too costly or impractical to be conducted often in the field,” said Bob Garner, senior vice president and general manager of MPRI’s Training Technology Group. “Whether used for pure marksmanship training or for shoot/no shoot judgmental training, the 390v6 offers trainees the opportunity to thoroughly practice their skills in a totally flexible and safe setting so that they can learn more and qualify faster.”
When using the 390v6 simulator, users can choose from several live-action videos or create unique scenarios using standard video formats to practice judgmental situations in any work environment. The system now includes a customized version of VirTra Systems’ proprietary video branching simulation software, as well as VirTra’s self-authoring software, which enables customers to create unique training scenarios for their exact requirements.
The 390v6 can be fully utilized in a limited space, requiring only a flat wall for projection. Its basic mode features full-size targets that can be set up in a firing range configuration, as well as a variety of fundamental skill-building exercises to help build and maintain marksmanship. Trainees use their own department-issued firearms, which remain untethered during training. Adding MPRI’s SafeShot® blanks and barrels provides recoil to complete the true-to-life training experience.

Federal Law Enforcement Training Center Purchases Six Driver Training Simulators from MPRI
Total Number of MPRI Simulators Used by FLETC Rises to 61
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — April 20, 2010 — L-3 MPRI, a global leader in ground vehicle, airport ramp, and maritime simulator products as well as training services and facilities, announced today that the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Artesia, N.M., has purchased and installed six new PatrolSim™ driver training simulators. This brings the total number of MPRI simulators purchased by FLETC to 61 in the past four years.
The Artesia Training Division is using the PatrolSims to support its Land Management Police Training Program, which includes trainees from the Bureau of Indian Affairs. The curriculum combines four hours of simulator-based training with classroom and field exercises. Driving skills practiced via simulator include pursuits, defensive driving, day and nighttime emergency response and skid control. Approximately 150 students will be trained on the new simulators in Artesia this year. FLETC has purchased PatrolSims from MPRI every year since 2006, and other FLETC locations utilizing them include Glynco, Ga., and Cheltenham, Md.
“FLETC’s commitment to world-class, technology-driven education is underscored in this latest purchase of MPRI driver training simulators,” said Dennis Corrigan, general manager of MPRI’s Training Systems Group. “By utilizing the PatrolSim, FLETC enables students to practice critical, high-risk tasks that are too dangerous or costly to be conducted frequently in actual vehicles. We commend FLETC for delivering the safest and broadest driver training experience possible.”
Each PatrolSim features the actual seat and steering console of a patrol vehicle surrounded by a three-channel plasma display that provides an immersive 180-degree view of driving environments. State-of-the-art software delivers sharp, lifelike images, and force-loaded steering provides real-time feedback to augment muscle memory in situations such as tire blowouts or PIT (precision immobilization technique) maneuvers. The PatrolSim also features the Instructor Operating Station, which allows instructors to track, record and play back the movements of multiple networked simulators, optimizing the practice of coordinated efforts. By utilizing MPRI simulators FLETC is able to reduce the frequency and severity of vehicle-related accidents and overall training-related costs.

MPRI and United Rentals Kick Off North American Driver Training Event to Underscore Safety at Every
MPRI’s Mobile Simulators and Custom Curriculum Provide State-of-the-Art Skills Development for 4,250 United Rentals Drivers
ALEXANDRIA, Va., and GREENWICH, Conn. — April 13, 2010 — L-3 MPRI, a global leader in airport ramp, ground vehicle, and maritime simulator products as well as training services and turnkey training facilities, and United Rentals, Inc. (NYSE: URI), the world’s largest equipment rental company, today announced that they have kicked off a driver safety initiative designed to improve and promote safety among United Rentals drivers.
The year-long program, which recently began, will train 4,250 drivers at approximately 70 locations across the United States and Canada. MPRI’s mobile training facilities, comprised of two trailers each containing two TranSim VS™ IV driver training simulators and classrooms, are dispatched to United Rentals facilities where MPRI authorized employee certified instructors guide students through a two-hour course on close-quarter maneuvering and distracted driving.
Designed by MPRI, the custom curriculum was developed by workforce education experts to meet the unique needs of United Rentals’ CDL and non-CDL drivers. The course challenges drivers to be aware of surroundings and demonstrate finely tuned skills in maneuvering vehicles within close quarters. Drivers also practice following detailed instructions while performing complicated vehicle maneuvers. Scenarios such as receiving cell phone calls and text messages, navigating with a map binder and drinking hot beverages are incorporated into the simulated experience to highlight the hazards of common drive-time activities.
The program also includes a rodeo-style driving competition. After completing the class, each driver will compete in a simulator-based contest. Various elements of their performance will be scored as drivers conduct intricate vehicle operations and navigate obstacles. Based on their scores, the top CDL and top two non-CDL performers from each of nine regions will be awarded prizes and qualify for the final rodeo competition to be held at United Rentals’ Dallas.
“United Rentals is at the forefront of driver training. By utilizing our world-class Training Systems Group, they are delivering a total training solution that includes custom curriculum development, human performance assessments, advanced distributed course development and state-of-the-art simulation-based training,” said Dennis Corrigan, senior vice president and general manager of MPRI’s Training Systems Group. “The result will be a driver force that experiences fewer accidents and is mindful of safety at every turn.”
“This marks the third MPRI-led driver training program we have conducted, and previous programs garnered very successful results — including a 42 percent reduction in accidents following the space management course,” said Heidi Rawe, senior director of sustainability for United Rentals. “Through this original curriculum and unique rodeo-style competition, we look forward to further strengthening our drivers’ commitment to safety.”
The TranSim VS IV provides high-fidelity, real-world driving environments that can be customized for various markets including trucking, snowplow, bus, ready mix, fire, police, EMS and the military. Featuring state-of-the-art software that delivers lifelike graphics via a three-channel plasma screen, drivers are immersed in myriad driving conditions in a risk-free setting. Force-loaded steering provides real-time feedback to augment muscle memory in situations such as a tire blowout or sloshing loads, and users can choose from more than 140 transmissions, 240 engines and 33 axle ratios to simulate nearly any vehicle type.

MPRI Adds New Towbarless Training Simulator to its Line of Airport Ramp Simulators
Simulated Pushback Training Affords Commercial Airlines Significant Savings
ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 16, 2010 – L-3 MPRI, a global leader in airport ramp, ground vehicle and maritime simulator products as well as training services and facilities, announced today that it has added a new product to its line of airport ramp training simulators, the Towbarless Training Simulator. Fashioned after the JBT Expediter, the simulator enables airlines and service providers to offer realistic training for ground support equipment (GSE) operators in a risk-free environment while significantly reducing training time and related costs.
MPRI’s new towbarless simulator allows GSE operators to practice driving the vehicle in a controlled, high-fidelity, immersive environment under a variety of conditions with a wide selection of aircraft. Operators practice correct procedures and techniques in a completely safe, simulator-based setting, which reduces costs associated with training and fuel consumption, as well as the risk of damage to equipment and aircraft or injury to personnel. Airlines benefit from thorough, standardized training that ensures best practices are consistently applied on the ramp.
“Because of their superior performance, towbarless pushback vehicles are poised for widespread adoption, and their operation requires specialized hands-on training and a substantially different technique than conventional towbar tractors,” said Dennis Corrigan, senior vice president and general manager of MPRI’s Training Systems Group. “Our towbarless simulator provides unmatched skills training as well as assessment and retention for GSE operators.”
MPRI’s towbarless simulator runs on a Windows®-based PC and includes three 32-inch LCD screens and a 12-inch by 12-inch touch screen. It features a steering wheel and foot pedals to emulate the feel and behavior of an actual truck. Lifelike graphics depict the terminal, including gates, ramp, taxiway and runway, and can be customized to reflect unique airport facilities and brands for the most realistic training experience possible. MPRI offers the industry’s largest collection of simulated airport ramps. For more information, please visit www.mpri.com/ramp.
