MPRI Unveils Two Major Enhancements to its Liquid Cargo Handling Simulator (LCHS)

Simulator Now Features a Model for Tankers Carrying Crude Oil, Products, and Chemicals,
and the WISE Assessment Tool for Optimal Skills Evaluation

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — October 14, 2009 — L-3 MPRI,  a global leader in maritime and vehicle simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced it has launched the first liquid cargo handling simulator (LCHS) model for handysize products tankers capable of carrying mixed loads of crude oil, products and Class 2 chemicals. The simulator provides lifelike training in all aspects of operating such tankers. MPRI also introduced the WISE Assessment Tool that intelligently gauges students’ ability to perform multiple critical tasks at once. The new tool works across all of MPRI’s LCHS models.

Determining the proper compatibility of handysize products tankers’ oil and chemical cargoes is vital to avoiding major safety risks including spills, explosions and fires. In addition to cargo selection and composition, all other onboard operations can be conducted and practiced on the simulator, including tank preparation, cargo loading and unloading, and heating,  all while accounting for stress and stability of the ship. It simulates the thermodynamic and fluid properties of liquids and gases both onboard the vessel and at the terminal ashore.

“By introducing an LCHS model for tankers that can carry crude oil, products and Class 2 chemicals, our customers enjoy unmatched versatility in a single training system, which is ideally suited for providing training and assessment in accordance with Intertanko’s Tanker Officer Training Standards (TOTS) initiative,” said Dennis Corrigan, senior vice president and general manager, Simulations Group, MPRI. “Combined with the WISE Assessment Tool, our LCHS improves cargo operators’ ability to meet tanker operating training standards and provides a risk-free environment in which to train for any type of scenario.”

The new LCHS simulator model is based on a ship built last year with nearly 33,000 cubic meters of capacity; 13 cargo tanks; two slop tanks; hydraulic cargo pumps; inert gas systems; crude oil washing and tank oil washing. The PC-based technology is easy to install and operate, and the graphics displayed on the multi-monitor configuration represent actual control systems found on vessels.

All of MPRI’s LCHS models now feature the new WISE Assessment Tool, which provides intelligent monitoring and objective feedback to students and instructors in a uniform way. Based on thousands of criteria, the tool automatically scores the operator throughout each developing scenario, providing visual feedback of progress to the instructor. Final assessment reflects not just students’ knowledge and understanding but their overall competence in undertaking complicated operations. It minimizes instructor workload during group training and also enables student-led training without an instructor.

The WISE Assessment Tool was developed jointly by professional mariners at MPRI and Warsash Maritime Academy in the U.K., and Professor Tom Addis of the University of Portsmouth in the U.K. Bringing together this level of tanker expertise with academic scholars has resulted in a very powerful and reliable assessment tool. This tool can play a vital role in tanker training and the level of competence of seafarers where a dwindling pool of available maritime lecturers exists.

MPRI offers the largest library of LCHS models available.  More information is available at http://www.mpri.com/maritime/index.php/content/products_lchs/lchs/.

MPRI Launches Its Expansion into the Mining Market - Four Simulator Sales to Barrick Gold Corp.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — June 23, 2009 — L-3 MPRI,  a global leader in vehicle simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced that Barrick Gold Corporation, the world’s pre-eminent gold mining company, has purchased four MPRI driver training simulators. The simulators will provide light vehicle training to drivers at up to seven of Barrick’s sites on four continents. This marks the first time Barrick has used simulator-based training for light vehicle operators, and the purchase underscores Barrick’s unwavering commitment to safe mining practices.

“At Barrick and across our industry, light vehicle safety has been gaining attention as an area for improvement,” said Bruce Huber, senior director of health and safety for Barrick Gold Corporation. “MPRI’s simulator-based training provides our drivers with lifelike and multi-faceted defensive driving experience in a risk-free environment. Combined with online courses and an in-vehicle mentoring system, we expect the training will improve drivers’ skills and driving habits, reducing the number of high-potential light vehicle incidents over the next two years.”

After a competitive search, Barrick selected MPRI based on the quality of MPRI’s solutions, competitive price, and location in Salt Lake City, which eased logistics for kicking off implementation at its regional office there. Other factors, such as MPRI’s high resolution, three-panel plasma display technology, and the opportunity to eventually switch between light and heavy vehicle training, also supported Barrick’s decision.

For Barrick, MPRI has developed customized systems to simulate the Ford F-150 pickup truck, Chevy Silverado 2500HD pickup truck, and Toyota’s HiLux and Land Cruiser models. Depending on location, some simulators feature manual transmission and right-hand drive. The four simulators will be installed and deployed by early July in the U.S., Tanzania, Argentina and Australia.

“We commend Barrick for its ongoing leadership in worker safety at its mines,” said Dennis Corrigan, senior vice president and general manager, Simulations Group, MPRI. “Mine sites feature many obstacles, hazards and unique driving elements such as unpaved roads, steep banks, rocks, holes,  heavy vehicle traffic and large equipment. Simulator-based training ensures a safe and highly effective learning environment for workers that is likely to save lives on the job.”

To kick off training, in May, MPRI and Barrick hosted a “Train the Trainers” event in Salt Lake City. The session included four days at MPRI’s headquarters to cover the technical aspects of the MPRI light vehicle simulators followed by four days at Barrick’s North American regional office for practice and strategy sessions.

Barrick’s vision is to be the world’s best gold company by finding, acquiring, developing and producing quality reserves in a safe, profitable and socially responsible manner. For more information, go to http://www.barrick.com.
