MPRI Signs Crane Simulator Contract with China’s Dalian Port

(November 13, 2006) -- Company Delivers First Crane Simulator with Tandem-Lift Technology

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Nov. 13, 2006 — MPRI, a global leader in maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced the sale of its maritime crane simulator to the Dalian Port Container Terminal Co., Ltd (DPCM), located in Dayao Bay, Dalian, China. The MPRI crane simulator is the sixth purchased by a Chinese port to date adding to those already in use at the Ports of Yantian, Ningbo, Tianjin and Shanghai. In addition, the DPCM simulator will include the only module on the market today for tandem-lift cranes.

The MPRI crane simulator can be tailored to meet the precise needs of various ports’ crane systems. DPCM specifically purchased a back projector model consisting of two modules, a ship-to-shore (STS) dock gantry single-lift system with tandem-lift technology and a rubber-tire gantry (RTG). The STS module exposes operators to such problems as hoist over torque and excessive swing and environmental conditions including rain, wind and night operations, while the RTG module helps operators improve their efficiency on the quay and avoid collisions. The cab of the MPRI crane simulator is mounted on a Moog 6-DOF motion base system which is designed to imitate the actual movements felt by operators in real-world scenarios. Other characteristics of the simulator include surround sound, real-time photo-textured 3-dimensional graphics and realistic crane capacities and limits.

“This recent sale adds to MPRI’s growing presence in China,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “With 32 MPRI crane simulator installations worldwide, it is clear that simulation training in virtual, life-like environments provides the best possible training tool for achieving efficient and safe crane operation.”
