High-tech simulators complement the state’s largest, most advanced indoor officer training facility

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and FAIRFIELD, Calif. - MPRI, a global leader in vehicle simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced that California’s Fairfield Police Department has purchased three PatrolSim IV driver training simulators, which will be housed in the department’s brand new, state-of-the-art training facility.

“We sought best-in-breed solutions for every aspect of our facility in order to raise the bar for training among peace officers here and across the state,” said Captain Rick Leonardini, Fairfield Police Department. “After a thorough search, only MPRI’s PatrolSim IV met our criteria for the training experience we envisioned. We purchased three of them so officers can train both independently and in tandem as part of a chase sequence comprised of a lead car, secondary car and supervisor. And the PatrolSim IV works with our use-of-force simulator, which is an important way for us to maximize the benefits of this technology.”

Each PatrolSim IV enables Fairfield officers to practice tactical driving skills in a life-like yet completely risk-free environment, without incurring expenses for gas. The simulators feature three high-resolution plasma display panels, a cruiser seat, steering wheel and standard dash to provide unmatched driving realism. Instructors navigate trainees through scenarios like traffic stops, pursuits and emergency responses via a touch screen, exposing them to various driving conditions and maneuvers in a single session.

“Fairfield PD is taking a real leadership position by incorporating three networked driver simulators into its one-of-a-kind facility and curriculum,” said Richard Gerding, senior vice president and general manager, Simulations Group, MPRI. “Its officers will be among the best trained in the state, and the citizens of Fairfield will be safer and better served as a result.”

The 39,000-square-foot Fairfield Police/Art Koch Training Facility, which opened in April, is the largest and most advanced indoor center of its kind in the state. In addition to the simulator center, it features a 20-lane, 25-yard pistol range; a six-lane, 100-yard rifle range; a 3,200-square-foot mat room for weaponless defense training; classrooms that accommodate up to 75 students; and a 20-seat conference room. The facility is named for Art Koch, the only Fairfield PD law enforcement officer to die in the line of duty. Koch was actively involved in advancing the training of the force during his tenure there.

All of the department’s 135 officers will be trained at the center on an ongoing basis, and the department will welcome other California agencies to use the facility as well. Fairfield PD is engaging in a certification process with the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (CAL POST), which recognizes achievement in education, training and experience. Most training currently conducted by Fairfield PD is POST-certified.

About MPRI
Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, MPRI provides comprehensive and integrated programs that address training, education, leader development, organizational design and implementation, simulations, democracy transition, and emergency management across a broad spectrum of functional areas.
National Solid Wastes Management Association Selects MPRI to Deliver State-of-the-Art Safety Training to Refuse Truck Drivers in 12 Cities

MPRI, a global leader in vehicle and maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced it has launched its expansion into the waste management market with a national training campaign for refuse truck drivers. The National Solid Wastes Management Association (NSWMA) selected MPRI to deliver state-of-the-art training to drivers in 12 cities across the country. NSWMA is a trade association representing for-profit companies that provide waste collection, recycling and disposal services, as well as companies that provide professional and consulting services to the waste services industry.

The campaign marks the first time that refuse truck driver training has been provided on a national scale through state-of-the-art, simulator-based technology. Simulators are a valuable training tool, providing drivers the opportunity to practice complex driving scenarios in a risk-free environment. Safety is a top concern in the $50 billion waste management industry with waste collection frequently identified as a high hazard occupation.

NSWMA is providing training free of charge under a grant provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). A total of 384 drivers will be trained on MPRI’s TranSim VS IV driver simulator with software tailored specifically for the waste management industry. The campaign kicks off in Louisville, Ky., on March 3, and will continue throughout the month in Chicago, St. Louis, Dallas, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New York and Boston, as well as Memphis, Tenn.; Raleigh, N.C.; Tulsa, Okla.; and Washington, D.C.

“NSWMA is breaking new ground in its commitment to industry safety through this initiative, and we are pleased that they selected us to provide this important training,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “Waste collection is a hazardous job and we are proud to play a key role in improving workplace conditions — and even saving lives — by teaching drivers techniques for operating equipment in the safest manner possible.”

“Safety should be a top priority for every member of the NSWMA, and that is why we’re excited to offer the largest, most accessible driver training program to date,” said David Biderman, safety director, NSWMA. “We are confident that MPRI’s innovative program will support our goal to reduce accidents and injuries involving solid waste collection vehicles and employees.”

Each two-hour training session will feature standard classroom and computer-based training as well as hands-on driving time on MPRI’s TranSim VS IV simulator. Because there are different types of waste collection vehicles, MPRI designed the simulator’s software to support a variety of equipment including residential and automatic tippers and commercial collection haulers. Since the events will take place in metropolitan settings where drivers must often operate in tight spaces such as alleys, training will focus heavily on space management and backing up.

NSWMA also recently launched a national safety awareness campaign called “Slow Down To Get Around” to generate public awareness of the need to slow down and give waste collection workers the space they need to do their jobs safely. Together, the training and public awareness campaigns are expected to contribute to the steady downward trend in workplace injuries for solid waste workers.

Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, MPRI is a recognized leader in maritime, driver and laser marksmanship simulation technology products, services and training capabilities.

Learn more about MPRI at www.mpri.com.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications employs over 64,000 people worldwide and is a prime contractor in aircraft modernization and maintenance, C3ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) systems and government services.
Washington, D.C., Snowplow Operators to Receive State-of-the-Art Training for First Time

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and WASHINGTON, D.C. — MPRI, a global leader in vehicle and maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, recently announced it will provide simulator-based training for snowplow drivers in Washington, D.C. Approximately 200 drivers of light and heavy snowplows will be trained on a TranSim VS IV simulator with software tailored specifically for the District of Columbia. This marks the first time that the district has offered simulator training to its snowplow operators.

“Since most snow events in the D.C. area tend to be moderate, with only a few inches of accumulation, it is difficult to provide snowplow drivers with the training they need to prepare for the major snowstorms we typically experience every few years,” said William Howland, director of the Washington, D.C., Department of Public Works. “In the past, we’ve tried training drivers using sand instead of snow, but we felt it didn’t offer a realistic learning experience. I am confident the simulator training will better prepare our drivers to handle the varied winter storms that we see here in D.C.”

MPRI is a leader in the field of snowplow simulator training, having taught employees of more than eight state transportation departments as well as several other state and local agencies. MPRI is the only company in North America with exclusive snowplow software, which includes various snowplow vehicle types and plowing scenarios. The TranSim VS IV simulator used for snowplow training offers approximately double the resolution of other simulators on the market, providing students a more realistic training environment. It also features six replay views, allowing for immediate and detailed performance feedback.

“I believe the department’s decision to seek out driver simulator training really demonstrates its dedication to the safety of its drivers and the residents of Washington, D.C.,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “I am confident the high degree of realism offered by our TranSim VS IV will give snowplow drivers the practical, most effective behind-the-wheel driving experience they need to prepare for the upcoming winter season.”

The software that will be utilized during training is customized specifically for Washington, D.C., and will include streets that are a mix of expressways, bridges, four-lane arterial streets, two-lane collector streets and single-lane residential streets. Local D.C.-area landmarks and street signs also add to the realism of the simulated environment. The training will feature both daytime and nighttime scenarios with varying conditions such as snow, fog and icy roads.

“I share Mr. Howland’s interest in this training program and look forward to seeing the results,” said Emeka Moneme, director of the D.C. Department of Transportation. “It requires a certain level of expertise to safely operate a snowplow. Allowing our drivers the opportunity to practice difficult scenarios in a risk-free environment will enhance their ability to safely plow under varied snow conditions. We have some drivers who have been with us for years, and others who will be plowing for the first time this year, and I feel that training on a simulator will be of great assistance to all of them.”

A recent study on snowplow simulator training found that this type of curriculum benefited all who used it, regardless of their level of experience. The study, conducted by David Strayer at the University of Utah, found that all drivers who received simulator training showed reductions in both the frequency and costliness of accidents, regardless of their years of experience operating a snowplow. Surveys also revealed that drivers of all experience levels found using the simulator helpful and recommended it as a standard part of driver training.

About MPRI
Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, MPRI provides comprehensive and integrated programs that address training, education, leader development, organizational design and implementation, simulations, democracy transition, and emergency management across a broad spectrum of functional areas.
DECA is the First in Australia to Offer Simulator-Based Driver Training

ALEXANDRIA, Va., and ALTONA NORTH, Victoria — MPRI, a global leader in vehicle and maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced it is the exclusive provider of driver training simulators to DECA Training, the largest driving school in Australia. The sale makes DECA the first driving school in Australia to offer simulation-based training, and also marks the first time MPRI has modified its training simulators for right-hand drive (RHD). The official launch of the new simulators at DECA took place on Oct. 18. Government officials, clients, suppliers and other members of the driving industry attended the event.

Because motorists in Australia drive on the left-hand side of the road while seated on the right-hand side of their vehicle, MPRI had to modify its simulators for RHD. This included moving the steering wheel and transmission and changing the configuration of the control panel. In addition, adjustments had to be made to the software, including switching street signs so they appear on the opposite side of the road and reversing traffic arrows that appear on pavement.

DECA purchased three MPRI TranSim VS IV simulators which will be integrated into the school’s existing program. TranSim VS IV simulators feature a 3-channel plasma screen immersive driving environment and provide real-time feedback for drivers as they encounter situations such as tire blowouts or shifting loads. In the basic mode, users are able to choose from more than 140 transmissions, 240 engines and 33 axle ratios, and four different driving environments: rural, suburban, freeway and mountain pass.

Ian Bushby, managing director of DECA Training, spent more than two years researching different simulators and traveling worldwide to meet with vendors in his search for the best simulator to fit DECA’s needs before selecting MPRI. “Ultimately, I chose MPRI because of its technological capabilities, ease of use and willingness to customize its existing simulator to meet our needs,” said Bushby.

“We worked closely with DECA to ensure that we met their RHD needs and are proud they selected our simulators to integrate into their driving instruction curriculum,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “I am confident the TranSim VS IV simulators will enhance DECA’s existing curriculum and further assist its students as they learn the skills necessary to become safe, conscientious drivers.”

In addition to its training programs for truck drivers, DECA offers courses designed for bus, coach and taxi drivers, forklift operators and motorcyclists. The company also offers various driving courses designed for motorists. More than 10,000 drivers receive training annually at DECA’s eight training facilities in Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand.

About MPRI
Headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, MPRI provides comprehensive and integrated programs that address training, education, leader development, organizational design and implementation, simulations, democracy transition, and emergency management across a broad spectrum of functional areas.
Company Invests in M-1114 HMMWV Trainer and Driving Curriculum to Help Save Soldiers’ Lives

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — MPRI, a global leader in vehicle and maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced the sale of its M-1114 state-of-the-art convoy and combat patrol driver’s training program to U.S. Army soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum in New York state. Through a collaborative effort with Toronto-based drive for life, the companies are providing a comprehensive simulator-based training program to provide drivers realistic experience in challenging situations in a no-risk environment, uniquely improving both driving behaviors and skills through an integrated training approach.

“Our immersive simulation trainer gives the troops at Fort Drum the ability to structure, conduct, analyze and reinforce combat driver training in an interactive and lifelike environment,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “With so many military vehicles currently deployed to other parts of the world and unavailable for training use, our program offers soldiers vital driving experience that may ultimately save lives.”

“We have identified that driving has become a critical combat skill just like shooting, communications and medical skills. As a former battalion commander in Baghdad, I have seen the importance of having confident, competent drivers in the combat zone. So when we had the opportunity to simulate combat driving skills in a very realistic simulator that provides the appropriate context for a fantastic curriculum from drive for life, the 10th Mountain Division took advantage of it,” said Lt. Col. Mark Meadows, chief of future training strategies for the 10th Mountain Division. “Since having the M-1114 simulator at Fort Drum, we have seen an immediate improvement in this critical skill. I am very impressed with this service and convinced that this training will save lives.”

The simulator trains soldiers on three vehicle simulators — a standard commercial vehicle, a standard HMMWV and an M-1114. The three-part training familiarizes drivers with specific differences in maneuverability among the different vehicles, and how to respond to them. More than 50 Fort Drum non-commissioned officers (NCO) have been trained to be assistant instructors, so soldiers can complete the program under their customary reporting structures. The system allows NCOs to gauge the aptitudes of potential drivers and assign roles accordingly.

“Our proprietary ‘SPOT’ training curriculum, Scan, Predict, Options, Taking Action, involves conditioning drivers to fully engage in the driving activity, constantly using their eyes to scan the area and predict what they might encounter,” said John Williamson, founder, drive for life. “That mental preparation and repetitive practice enables them to quickly and automatically evaluate options and effectively take action when necessary — important for combat and other high-pressure situations.”

The M-1114 trainer comes equipped with an Instructor Operating Station that controls every aspect of training “missions,” enabling leaders to seed routine duty sequences with threats like improvised explosive devices (IEDs), coordinated ambushes and convoy stops. A pilot project to evaluate training results was conducted in summer 2006, followed by fine-tuning and additional customization to ensure the utmost applicability to environments that soldiers might encounter upon deployment. Formal training began April 24, 2007.

The M-1114 up-armored High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or “Humvee”) in use by the U.S. military features reinforced steel plating and ballistic-resistant windows as well as other up-armament enhancements and weighs in excess of 14,000 pounds. Two thousand pounds heavier than a standard HMMWV, the M-1114 presents inherent driving challenges such as a longer lead time in braking and frequent occurrence of rollover.

About MPRI
Headquartered in Alexandria, Va., MPRI is a recognized leader in maritime, driver and laser marksmanship simulation technology products, services and training capabilities.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Jan. 8, 2007 — MPRI, a global leader in maritime simulator products, services and turnkey training facilities, today announced that the International Longshoreman’s Association (ILA) & United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) has purchased a complete upgrade for its MPRI crane training simulator. MPRI revamped the software and hardware components of the more than 15-year-old simulator, providing new technological capabilities that will help prepare and train operators at all the alliance’s ports. The ILA/USMX’s crane simulator resides at the Maritime Institute of Technology and Graduate Studies (MITAG) training facility in Linthicum Heights, Md.

The newly installed hiCRANE2 software provides advanced technologies that will enable users to stay on course with the latest developments in crane production. Some of the features include a ZPMC crane model, a library of various vessels types common to the Port operations and an advanced logging system. The system, with load manifest included, mimics ports logistics operations. And the software also enables users to build a flow chart, creating the feeling of a real-time operation. Other parts of the software upgrade include new environmental capabilities which create weather scenarios for all weather conditions. The entire system is Windows-based for easy compatibility with existing programs.

The hiCRANE2 hardware upgrades feature a new modern mock up cab design modeled after real-life crane. Available with 3 or 6 DOF, the new system replaces hydraulic lifts with an electric motion base. This moves the pivot point from the front of the simulator to the rear, allowing for quicker movements which create a better sensation and a more pronounced life-like feeling.

“There are many advantages to this upgrade, one of the biggest being that the MPRI crane simulator can now be tailored to meet all the needs of our various ports’ crane systems, without purchasing a new simulator to achieve this,” said Thomas P. Sullivan, director of labor relations for USMX. “MPRI delivered on its promise to provide a cost-competitive, technologically advanced, durable crane simulator which will provide true-to-life training scenarios for our operators.”

“As the need for new operators increases and surplus at the ports continues to grow, training is becoming an even more crucial factor for companies determined to keep workers safe and equipment intact,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “Simulation training in a virtual, almost real environment is an optimal tool for efficient crane operation.”

About MPRI
MPRI, an L-3 Communications company is a leader in maritime and driver simulation technology products, services and training capabilities.
Cutting-Edge Technology Enables Lifelike Pre-Deployment Training for the U.S. Military

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — Oct. 3, 2006 — MPRI, a global provider of vehicle and maritime simulation products, training and services, announced today it has developed the first driver training simulator for the M-1114 up-armored High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or “Humvee”). The new simulator supplies U.S. military troops with invaluable hands-on training and experience maneuvering the M-1114 in mission-critical situations prior to deployment, improving troop safety. The system will debut at the AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition on October 9, 2006 in Washington D.C.

“To support combat efforts overseas, most HMMWVs are shipped prior to training and troops are not given the opportunity to practice roll-over avoidance techniques and incline-decline driving skills, which are critical for navigating hazardous driving situations,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president of MPRI. “The new simulator provides a realistic, risk-free training environment prior to driving in combat situations, daily convoy operations or other high-stress conditions.”

The M-1114 in use by the U.S. military is an up-armored vehicle with reinforced steel plating and ballistic-resistant windows that weighs in at 12,100 pounds. Two thousand pounds heavier than a standard HMMWV, the M-1114 presents inherent driving challenges such as a longer lead time in breaking and frequent occurrence of rollover. The M-1114 HMMWV Driver Training Simulator is designed to help soldiers overcome those challenges. It features a three-channel plasma screen that combines the look and feel of an actual HMMWV while delivering sharp visuals and images to enhance lifelike scenarios. Force-loaded steering provides real-time physical feedback to augment muscle memory in unique driving scenarios. The SimCommander feature allows instructors to teach up-close via a touchscreen on the dash.

Tactical vehicle-like training helps strengthen steering skills, reducing drivers’ reliance on braking. Space and speed management are also valuable training assets of the simulator. After Action Review (AAR) information is collected during each exercise and is reviewed at the conclusion of the training session allowing experts to critique the session and make recommendations for additional and specific instructional needs. The combination of cutting edge technology augmented with a thorough training curriculum results in a highly effective hands-on learning environment.

To experience the M-1114 HMMWV Driver Trainer, visit MPRI’s booth (#239) at AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition in Washington D. C., October 9-11.
ALEXANDRIA, Va. — September 5, 2006 — The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), an interagency training organization for more than 80 federal agencies, as well as state, local and international law enforcement agencies, announced today that it has awarded a contract with options to purchase 28 PatrolSim™ IV driver training simulators from MPRI, an L-3 Communications company and global provider of vehicle and maritime simulation products, training and services. The simulators will be housed in FLETC’s brand new, state-of-the-art training facility in Glynco, Ga., near Brunswick. Installation of the simulators will begin in July of this year, with all 28 units installed by July 2007.

The driver simulators will be located in the Simulation Laboratory in Glynco, Ga., a new, 40,000-square foot building composed of an open bay area for simulators as well as eight simulation labs designed to facilitate table-top computer-based simulation exercises. The facility will open later this year.

FLETC serves as the Federal government’s leader for and provider of world-class law enforcement training. They prepare new and experienced law enforcement professionals to fulfill their responsibilities in a safe manner and at the highest level of proficiency. FLETC also ensures that training is provided in the most cost-effective manner by taking advantage of economies of scale available only from a consolidated law enforcement training organization.

“FLETC strives to provide the highest level of training to ensure the safety of our nation’s law enforcement officers and agents and the general public,” said Terry Tucker, senior vice president, MPRI. “By selecting the PatrolSim IV from MPRI, FLETC will provide the most advanced driver training to its students, establishing the center as a leader not only in training but also as an early adopter of world-class technology. We are excited to be a part of that success.”

Over the past two years FLETC conducted extensive, global market research on driving simulators and issued a Request for Information that resulted in a full and open competition utilizing General Services Administration (GSA) schedules. The PatrolSim IV from MPRI met all of FLETC’s requirements and also provided the best value.

The PatrolSim IV complements existing training by enabling drivers to train for critical, high-risk tasks that are too dangerous and/or costly to be conducted frequently in vehicles, e.g. driving on ice, fording streams, driving under blackout conditions, and driving down steep embankments when coming off an improved road. It features high resolution graphics on plasma displays to provide unmatched realism, and comprehensive training with hundreds of POST Certified Scenarios consisting of traffic stops, pursuits, multiple vehicles, emergency responses, etc. It also features the Instructor Operating Station, which allows the instructor to track, record and play back the movements of multiple networked simulators, which is ideal for coordinated pursuits.

By utilizing simulators to supplement and reinforce their actual non-emergency, skid control, and emergency driving, FLETC will reduce the frequency and severity of vehicle-related operational accidents involving law enforcement officers, which are the greatest liability for loss of life on duty.

About MPRI
MPRI, an L-3 Communications company is a leader in driver simulation technology products, services and training capabilities.
MPRI and Bison Transport Combine Simulation Technology and Driver Training to Deliver Superior Safety Results and Fuel Savings

Bison Transport Receives Prestigious 2005 National Fleet Safety Award from The Truckload Carriers Association

Salt Lake City, Utah and Winnipeg, Manitoba — MPRI, an L-3 Communications company and global provider of vehicle and maritime simulation products, training and services, and Bison Transport, one of Canada’s largest providers of truckload transportation, announced today that their joint effort to integrate simulation technology into Bison’s driver training program has been recognized by The Truckload Carriers Association (TCA). TCA named Bison the grand prize winner of its prestigious 2005 National Fleet Safety Award for Bison’s commitment to overall safety on and off highway. Since the implementation of MPRI simulators in 2002, Bison’s annual accumulated safe driving miles for their fleet of 800 trucks have increased by nearly 50 percent, while greater fuel efficiency resulted in annual savings of $1,120,000.

“There is no greater testament to the success of our simulators than the qualitative and quantitative results that Bison Transport has seen in its customized training program,” said Stewart Wallace, senior vice president at MPRI. “Bison’s program has captured the full potential of our technology and translated that into safety standards that deliver cost efficiencies and, most importantly, the safety of their drivers and the motoring public. We are excited to be a part of that success and to work with Bison to continue this trend.”

Bison won the safety award in the category of companies operating more than 25 million miles annually, and was selected from 18 division winners in the National Fleet Safety Division Awards announced in January. The award was presented to Rob Penner, vice president, operations of Bison Transport at TCA’s annual conference in March. Bison is the first Canadian trucking company to utilize stationary and full motion simulators into its training program.

Bison uses MPRI’s full suite of state-of-the-art driver simulators to expose drivers to a broad range of driving scenarios designed to strengthen and refine safety skills over the road. MPRI driver training simulators, which include the Mark III and TranSim VS models, are aimed at transforming safer driving techniques into greater profitability for companies. The simulators feature leading-edge software for clear visuals across three screens for a 180- to 360-degree field of vision, precision motion platforms for a realistic feel, steering that provides real-time feedback to augment muscle memory in maneuver techniques, and a fully operational cab/dashboard with true-to-life instrument panel, gauges and other features.

“For Bison, the protection of our people, our environment and those we share the roads with is of critical importance,” said Don Streuber, president and CEO at Bison Transport. “Our investment in technology and in the people who deliver our programs and our customers’ freight clearly demonstrates that safety is our collective responsibility, not just that of our drivers. We foster a culture of continuous learning for all, and our skills development program using simulation is the focal point of our road safety program. We have seen an 83 percent improvement in meantime between incidents after simulator training for preventable accidents — these results speak for themselves.”

Drivers are applauding Bison’s use of simulators as well. Said one Bison driver, “With the instruction I received on the simulator, I have markedly improved my driving skills. The “seven second rule” training course was invaluable in helping me better gauge the time I need to come to a complete stop in any scenario. When the situation presented itself in reality, I instantly assessed the situation and reacted to avoid hitting a truck that spun toward me in oncoming traffic. Because of the training, I was a witness to the accident – not a participant.”

TCA is the only national trade association in the United States whose collective sole focus is the truckload segment of the motor carrier industry. It represents dry van, refrigerated, flatbed, and intermodal container carriers operating in 48 contiguous states as well as Alaska, Mexico and Canada. Representing operators of more than 200,000 trucks, which collectively produce and annual revenue of more than $20 billion, TCA is an organization tailored to specific truckload carrier needs.

About MPRI
MPRI, an L-3 Communications company, with an office in Salt Lake City, Utah, is a leader in driver simulation technology products, services and training capabilities.
Schneider National Shifts to Simulation-Based Training for its 15,500 Driver Fleet

Green Bay, Wis. and Salt Lake City, Utah -- Schneider National Inc., a premier provider of transportation, logistics and related services, announced today that it will dramatically transform its driver training program over the next two years, incorporating MPRI's motion-based driver training simulator to better prepare drivers for situations on the road. MPRI, with offices around the world, is a global leader in the supply of ground vehicle and maritime simulation products and services as well as critical incident management and emergency response solutions. The shift makes Schneider National the largest, and one of the first, truckload carriers in the industry to incorporate simulation-based training fleet-wide.

“Through the years, Schneider's training programs have been recognized as the gold standard in the industry when it comes to successfully preparing drivers for the rigors of the road,” said Schneider Vice President of Safety and Training Don Osterberg. “But when it comes to safety, we always strive to do more. Using motion-based simulation technology allows us to train drivers for those situations that cannot safely be replicated under our current training methods.”

Under the program, Schneider will purchase simulators over the next 12 months for its network of driver training academies located across the United States and Canada. Schneider, one of the only trucking companies in the industry to offer company-paid driver training, is incorporating simulation in its training program as it evolves to an integrated learning model. Currently Schneider's driver training program is primarily instructor-based. However, the new program will incorporate both computer and simulation training in order to expose drivers to a broader range of on-the-road scenarios, including driving in inclement weather, handling equipment failures or navigating heavy traffic.

“Think of it as an IMAX ® experience for trucking,” Osterberg said. “In the simulator, the driver's seat and on-screen images will move, spin and rotate to create the sensation of different driving conditions. It's amazing how realistic simulation makes these scenarios feel.”

Osterberg notes that the simulator can even be customized by location, so that a driver in training can experience what it will look and feel like to deliver loads to different types of facilities in various geographic locations.

Schneider National piloted its new integrated learning model, including simulation, in September 2004.
The U.S. Army, PEO STRI (Program Executive Office for Simulation, Training and Instrumentation) awarded an $11.2 million contract to MPRI located in Columbia, Maryland for the Laser Marksmanship Training Systems (LMTS) and the Laser Counter Convoy Ambush Training System (L-CCATS). The simulations will provide critical marksmanship training to Soldiers. If all options are exercised, the contract has a total value of $18.6 million.

The training systems provide deployable marksmanship training that operates in austere environments. The LMTS provides individual marksmanship training while the L-CCATS provides collective training. Soldiers train using their actual weapons without live ammunition. The systems provide realistic, cost effective training to units who are deployed or at homestation. The LMTS simulates weapons training events and leads to live-fire qualifications for individual and crew served weapons. The fielding of the LMTS helps meet the US Army Infantry Schools training strategy for small arms training.

"This capability will enable our warfighters to experience realistic marksmanship training that will hone their skills and prepare our Soldiers for combat missions," said Lt. Col. Joe Giunta, the Product Manager for Ground Combat Tactical Trainers at PEO STRI. "The systems we field today enable our Soldiers to be confident on the battlefield as they face real, live threats in this global war on terror."

The systems will be used by Active, Reserves and the National Guard for continuing operations in the Global War on Terrorism.

This contract was awarded under the PEO STRI Omnibus Contract (STOC). The program will be managed under the Product Manager, Ground Combat Tactical Trainers at PEO STRI. PEO STRI is headquartered in Central Florida's Research Park in East Orlando. In addition to research, development and program management, the PEO provides Life-Cycle support and operations for most of the Army's training systems around the world. PEO STRI is dedicated to putting the power of simulation into the hands of our warfighters.
Announcement by PEO STRI

MPRI Announces the Invention of LCCATS

Steve Baines
The Laser Convoy Counter Ambush Training System (LCCATS) is one of the most advanced small arms training systems in the world. With L-CCATS, soldiers and law enforcement professionals engage full-scale, computer controlled targets set at actual distances and placed in a number of actual terrain and combat scenarios. Using their own service weapons (M16, M4, M249, M240, M2 and M24 supported), shooters can ride in vehicles where they are introduced to the challenges of critical counter ambush driver skills, accurate fire from a moving platform, evasive maneuvers and spacing discipline training, and crew/team cohesion training. Moving over actual terrain, shooters learn to engage targets in multi-level buildings, overpasses, and conflicted lines of sight.

Because the full-scale, un-tethered targets detect hits out to 600 yards, sniper over watch can be added to any TTP. This system works outdoors, day or night, and instructors can monitor weapon muzzle reference during target engagement to prevent fratricide among vehicle occupants and vehicles in a convoy. One person can conduct set up in minutes. No range safety issues exist with this system; eye safe laser "bullets" mean training can be conducted anywhere, at any time. The LCCATS includes full-scale targets that detect LMTS laser hits to 600 meters in direct sunlight, lifters that plug into an existing LMTS Mini-RETS system, and system software with full scenario authorization.

IACP and Law Enforcement Explorers Enjoy MPRI Competition

The Law Enforcement "Explorers" program is a worksite-based program for youths 14 to 20 years of age interested in the field of Law Enforcement. Members of the "Explorers" obtain real life law enforcement experiences that help young people mature and build character, life skills, citizenship, and leadership skills. To that end, "Explorers" receive law enforcement training in everything from community service and crime prevention to drug abuse prevention and firearms training.

To help improve the "Explorers" program, to honor its members, and to have members compete in individual competitions, every two years the International Association Chiefs of Police (IACP) holds the Law Enforcement Explorer Conference. Held July 19-24 at Georgia Tech University, this year an estimated 3,500 "Explorers" attended the five-dayevent.

MPRI was also one of the participating vendors at the event and set up a shot grouping competition in which young Explorers were offered the opportunity to display their marksmanship skills. Using a BEAMHIT DA Glock pistol with LT-100 laser transmitters and a BEAMHIT TR-900 computerized target, each shooter had 5 practice shots and then 10 shots for record. Each 10 shot group was measured for shot dispersion, and the shooter with the tightest shot group won. The best shot group for the 1000 participating Explorers was 11mm., shot by Jeremy Brandenburg of the South San Francisco PD Explorer Post 850. Kevin Morton, also from the South San Francisco PD Explorer Post 850, came in second with a group size of 18mm.

Use of the LMTS (Laser Marksmanship Training Systems) are not new to the "Explorers" program. Many police departments across the country have been using the LMTS for recruit training and as a part of pistol training exercises for the "Explorer" program.

"We use the BEAMHIT system exactly as MPRI trained us," says Lt. Mike Rallings, Firearms Training Unit Commander for the Memphis, Tennessee Police Department. "We've run more then 500 recruits through training with the BEAMHIT system and use the same four exercise small arms training standards as the US Army.

It's saved us both time and money. It's been so successful that we've also incorporated it into our "Explorers program."

Rallings says the LMTS has allowed them to design marksmanship programs for young men and women interested in becoming police officers. "Once we got comfortable with the LMTS, we incorporated it into our "Explorers" training program. This program is designed for youths 14 to 18 interested in becoming police officers. We do premarksmanship training with them on the BEAMHIT system before they head to the livefire range. Part of the program involves shooting at competition levels with 9mm Smith and Wessons. The LMTS has greatly shortened the learning curve for all of these young shooters."

MPRI is the producer and sole supplier of the Laser Marksmanship Training Systems (LMTS), the most portable, cost-effective, state-of-the-art weapon replication systems in the world. The LMTS is an established training tool in all the US Military Services, many foreign military services, most Federal law enforcement agencies, large numbers of local, state, and international police and security organizations, and the civilian public. MPRI's LMTS is helping to train and support military personnel and activities in such adverse environments as Afghanistan, Iraq, and other environments where a cost-effective small arms training system is crucial.

Business Wire

NEW YORK (BUSINESS WIRE), L-3 Communications (NYSE: LLL) announced today that on May 13, 2004 it acquired substantially all the assets of BEAMHIT, LLC, for $40 million in cash paid at closing, plus potential additional consideration, that is contingent on the post-acquisition financial performance of BEAMHIT, LLC for 2004 to 2007. The acquisition is expected to be slightly accretive to L-3 Communications' results for 2004, and will be part of the L-3 MPRI operating group.

Located in Columbia, Maryland, BEAMHIT, LLC is a leading developer and supplier of laser marksmanship training systems. Lanza, chairman and chief executive officer of L-3 Communications. "This growing company has become a leader in small arms marksmanship training after only seven years as a business," continued Mr. Lanza. "It is a good example of how a small entrepreneurial company can set a new standard in defense technology, specifically in small arms positive training."

BEAMHIT, LLC has developed a number of state-of-the-art small arms marksmanship readiness tools enabling users to practice their shooting skills with their own service weapons -- without live fire, having to go to a range, or depleting their ammunition. The training is very realistic, as employing the actual weapon also allows the user to experience the sounds and recoil when it is fired. The laser-based training experience can include weapons from handguns through machine guns, and can be scored for accuracy automatically on a personal computer. This system also works effectively against virtual reality targets in urban warfare as well as security roles.

"We are confident that there is a growing and necessary market in the DoD for simulation and training to assist our forces in maintaining readiness at affordable cost," continued Mr. Lanza. "The DoD is increasingly focused on systems that can save money and time, and that can be networked together and provide positive training. BEAMHIT's portable, scaleable and deployable systems are leaders in the application of this type of technology to small arms."

One of its key products -- the BEAMHIT(TM) Laser Marksmanship Training System (LMTS) sets a new standard in realistic handgun, rifle and machine gun training. The LMTS is a projectile-less modular system allowing soldiers to use their own service weapon and train in any classroom, maintenance bay or other suitable open space as requirements dictate. No special facilities, utilities or support is required. For two consecutive years, it achieved record-setting performance at West Point, demonstrating that training time and ammunition can be saved with this marksmanship system.

BEAMHIT's new Distance Learning Marksmanship Training System will be launched in June at a U.S. Army Reserve location in Rhode Island. Through the use of the Internet, the U.S. Army Reserve can put master instructors online from a single location to help soldiers anywhere in the world successfully meet the high standards of small marksmanship instruction. This system can serve as global link for military forces to enhance and maintain readiness.

Headquartered in New York City, L-3 Communications is a leading provider of Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) systems, secure communications systems, aircraft modernization, training and government services and is a merchant supplier of a broad array of high technology products.
