Video: LMTS Builds Solid Foundation for Marksmanship
01/13/05: by Naval Media Center

USNR editor/videographer Dave Hechts of The Naval Media Center recently interviewed military personnel from the Tucson, Arizona Naval and Marine Corp Reserve Center to produce a short video clip on their use of the MPRI Laser Marksmanship Training System (LMTS), an intricate part of their small arms training program.

"The military calls it a Vibration Actuated Laser Marksmanship System," says Hechts in his interview, "but those training on it just call it cool." Hechts also commented on the advanced technology and the cost efficiency of the MPRI LMTS the military has set up in Tucson and at other bases across the country. "No live ammunition is ever fired on this futuristic firing range. That saves taxpayers money."

Firearms instructor SW3 Steve Carriere says that this is a serious and safe training tool. "You get the same familiarization with the firearms as you would with live rounds with half the danger," says Carriere.

Firearms instructor MA2 Douglas Newman summed it all up when he said that the LMTS is a real foundation builder. "Just as you're building a house, you have a foundation of the house. In marksmanship you have a foundation of marksmanship. The Beamhit system helps us build a solid foundation for marksmanship and then we can transfer to live ammunition."
